Mitigate Impacts of Vacancy & Environmental Health Issues

Blighted, vacant properties pose safety hazards, erode the health of local housing markets, decrease surrounding property values, and reduce local tax revenue. Substandard housing conditions are a social justice issue and can be associated with a wide range of health conditions, including respiratory infections, asthma, lead poisoning, and negatively impact mental health. Actions in this area will undoubtedly rely on strong partnerships with local nonprofits, social services, and healthcare professionals to facilitate new housing improvement, mitigation, and assistance programs.

Action

Address Environmental Issues on Existing Vacant Land & Commercial Spaces

Target short and long term environmental interventions on properties throughout MidTown. Implement environmental remediation, tree planting, and other bioremediation where possible. Take action related to air quality (industrial and auto emissions), tracking environmental polluters.

Near-Term Actions

Tree-Canopy

Conduct Phase 1 Site Assessments on suspected problem properties. Fund remediation efforts, if possible.

Plant 175 street trees annually in MidTown.

Identify site for near term use as MidTown Orchard / Tree Farm.
