2/22/2010 - Work Party 118
Corrie Slawson, Work Party 118 (detail), 2009-10, public and gallery installation, is a work-in-progress. Corrie Slawson, a long-time Clevelander, is interested in solitary moments of transit through vacant spaces. Whether by car, by bus, or by foot, she explores often-overlooked locales and the cast-off litter and remnants that grow and accumulate within these areas.
For her SPACELab project, Slawson will worked collaboratively with Cleveland residents. Using elements from her own collection of materials and found objects from sites in MidTown Cleveland, the artist and her neighborhood team worked together to build a colorful public art installation in the gallery and in the city. Through the exploration of form, line, color, waste, and land use, Slawson created a rebirth of beauty and activity in a neighborhood she loves and wants to share.
The outdoor public project is accompanied by a related exhibition at SPACES. In the gallery, visitors can view an independent installation that utilizes the same materials found in MidTown along drawings, plans, and information about the site-specific project.
Cleveland residents and gallery visitors have been invited to co-create the public projects on three city plots. Under the guidance and support of MidTown Cleveland, Inc., Slawson has secured vacant plots (accessible for public viewing) for her Work Party.
Slawson received a BFA in painting at Parsons School of Design, New York, NY (1997) and an MFA in Painting at Kent State University, Kent, OH (2006). Her work has been exhibited at Zygote Press, Cleveland; The Beck Center for the Arts, Cleveland; Dangenart Gallery, Nashville, TN; Cleveland Public Art, Cleveland; Cleveland Environmental Center, Cleveland; and Parsons School of Design, New York, NY. Slawson also exhibited her work in Street Repairs (2006) at SPACES. In 2006, her portfolio was featured in Angle: A Journal of Arts & Culture (Volume 3, Issue 25).
